What this site adds

Our database holds 8,947 polls going back to 1940. We bring them together and work out what no single poll shows.

How the average is calculated

The average quoted on the home page and on every party page is the mean of the most recent poll from each pollster that published in the 12 months up to the newest poll. Each pollster counts once and equally, however often it polls. We do not weight by sample size or method, and we make no forecast.

For the charts, each pollster’s polls are joined into a line: between two polls from the same pollster less than 122 days apart we interpolate in a straight line; across longer gaps, and beyond a pollster’s latest poll, we draw nothing. In the overview each party’s line runs midway between its lowest and highest pollster, with that range shaded; on a party’s own page every pollster has its own line. How to read the charts

How accurate each pollster has been

How this is measured: for each past election we take each pollster’s last poll in the 30 days before polling day and compare it, party by party, with the result. The figure is the mean absolute difference across the parties that appear in both. Only parties the pollster actually reported are counted. How often the data is updated

Our system re-reads the source every 15 minutes. Newly added polls are picked up automatically, and the averages and charts are recalculated at the same time.

Sources and licence

The current polls are read automatically from the public UK general-election polling pages on English Wikipedia, which are maintained and cited by their editors, and are available under the Creative Commons licence CC BY-SA 4.0. We are grateful to Wikipedia's editors and to the pollsters for their work; naming the source is a condition of that licence. How the figures are presented on this site is our responsibility, not theirs.

The historical polls, up to the recent past, come from PollBase, the archive of British opinion polls compiled by Mark Pack. We are grateful for its use and credit it here as a condition of that use; any errors in how the figures are presented on this site are ours, not PollBase's.

What the figures cover

The figures shown here are Great Britain vote shares: they cover England, Scotland and Wales but exclude Northern Ireland, which has its own separate party system and its own polling. Historical election results are shown on the same Great Britain basis, so they can differ slightly from the UK-wide numbers quoted elsewhere.

For polls before roughly 1970 the historical archive records only the month of fieldwork, not the exact day. Those polls are dated to the 15th of the month by convention, so they sit in the right place on the timeline without implying a precision the original records don't have.
